Gravel driveways are part of life in rural Guthrie County. Most properties outside of Stuart proper have a gravel drive, a gravel parking pad, or both. Over time, gravel migrates to the edges, gets compacted, and thins out in the areas that see the most traffic. A fresh load of gravel every few years keeps the drive in good shape and prevents the rutting and pothole problems that develop when the base gets too thin.

Driveway and Parking
A gravel driveway that's installed right -- properly graded, the right base depth, and the right gravel size -- will last years before needing a refresh. A driveway that's just a load of rock dumped on flat ground washes out at the edges, ruts in the middle, and needs constant maintenance.
When we install a gravel driveway or parking pad, we do it with a proper base. That means grading the surface so it crowns slightly in the middle for drainage, putting down the right depth of material for the traffic load, and spreading it evenly. We've done this work for residential properties all across the area -- long rural driveways, short in-town drives, and parking areas for commercial and farm properties.
Topsoil and Fill
Fill dirt and black dirt (topsoil) are two different things, and using the right one in the right place matters. Fill dirt is subsoil -- it compacts well, holds grade, and is what you use when you're building up elevation or filling in voids. It's not good growing medium and shouldn't be used as a final surface layer for lawn areas.
Black dirt (screened topsoil) is what you use as the top layer -- the final 4 to 6 inches that your seed or sod actually grows in. It has the organic matter and structure that plants need. It's more expensive than fill dirt, so you use fill to get to grade and top-dress with black dirt where you need growth.
For most lawn repair and seeding projects, that combination -- fill dirt to level, black dirt on top -- gives you the best result at a reasonable cost. We can deliver either or both and advise on how much you need based on your project.

How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
A standard driveway gravel installation is 4 inches deep. To figure out how many tons you need, multiply the length in feet by the width in feet, then multiply by 0.333 (to get cubic feet at 4-inch depth), then divide by 27 (cubic feet per cubic yard), then multiply by 1.4 (the approximate weight in tons per cubic yard of crushed stone). For a typical 100-foot by 12-foot driveway, that works out to roughly 18 to 22 tons depending on the stone type. Call us with your dimensions and we'll work up a number. We'll always round up slightly so you don't come up short on the job.
What is the difference between fill dirt and black dirt?
Fill dirt is subsoil -- typically clay-heavy soil from below the topsoil layer. It compacts well and holds grade but doesn't support plant growth well because it lacks organic matter and has poor structure for roots. Black dirt is topsoil -- the upper layer of soil that's rich in organic matter. It's what grass, plants, and trees actually grow in. For most projects, you use fill dirt to build up elevation and then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of black dirt as the growing layer. Using only black dirt to fill large voids is expensive and unnecessary. Using only fill dirt for lawn areas results in poor growth and thin turf.
Do you do delivery only or installation too?
Both. If you want material dropped in your driveway and you plan to spread it yourself, we can do a drop delivery. If you want us to grade, spread, and finish the work as part of a full installation, we do that too. Most customers who are doing a gravel driveway or significant grading project have us do the whole job -- it's faster and comes out more even than hand-spreading. For landscaping mulch or smaller projects, delivery-only is often the right call. Just tell us what you're looking to do when you call.
